A gunman fired several shots into a vehicle near a McDonald’s across the street from a San Francisco police station on Sunday, killing a passenger in the car and sending people in the area running for cover, police said.
Sgt. Anthony Manfreda said the brazen attack happened shortly before 3 p.m. as a Dodge sedan was leaving the restaurant’s parking lot in the city’s Western Addition neighborhood.
“It happened in the middle of the afternoon, and there was a lot of pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic,” he said.
Manfreda said the gunman approached the passenger side of the car, looked inside before firing at close range. He said the vehicle couldn’t move because of traffic and was “a sitting duck.”
Witnesses said the gunman ran through the parking lot and got into another car which sped away.
The victim got out the driver’s side and ran a few steps before collapsing on the sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Investigators were interviewing the driver, who was not injured, and other witnesses. They were also reviewing security video at the scene.
A man who works at another restaurant across the street told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://sfg.ly/1Tz6WBp) he heard five or six shots. He said officers from the Northern Station ran to the scene almost immediately, but added that having the police station on the block doesn’t deter crime in the neighborhood.
“They don’t fear the cops,” Sam Lin said.
